Day 8: Kiaramba Spring to Kowmung House (New Yards)
Definitely a more relaxed morning (note that Day Light Saving finished whilst we were at Yerranderie). We made a beeline for the road, by hopefully the most direct route, and built a cairn (just in case anyone else wants a reminder of where the spring is). The 100 odd metre climb is well worth the effort.
Just down the road is the rain gauge. It's pretty easy walking, and we've walked this part previously. The last time it had been raining, and funnily enough, it's not long before the clouds come over and threatens rain. We'd refreshed the waterproofing on our rain gear before this walk (as it performed disappointingly last time), and we'd bought some pants: so we would be glad to test them out And it's not long before the rain gets heavy enough to stop to put it all on...
But it didn't last very long, and in half an hour we were ready to stop for morning tea and take it all back off again.
Had wet weather gear on briefly today for a squally shower, but it finished almost before we got them on! Seemed OK though: comfy enough.
We'd walked this section before when we were at Kanangra Walls, it seemed that it was easier this time around, and the short climbs in the road did not seem as hard as it was last time . It's easy walking, though the hard road gets tiresome. It was interesting to read in the Track Notes that it was suggested to walk off the road under the trees (to save on foot blisters).
Good quick walking day today. A little tiresome walking on road all day (a trade-off for speed) - road changed character after Bran Jan and looked less used: certainly nicer to walk on! Some lovely views West and East. Ready for a break when we arrived at Kowmung House - wonderful to have time to relax in the afternoon and dry socks, etc.
We arrived at Kowmung house just before 1:00 PM: in good time for lunch!
Went quite well today, but my feet and legs very tired by the time we arrived here at 1pm. Can only assume it's partly due to no orthotics. Felt TIRED and hungry. Very glad of lunch then a wander around here. All quite newly mown. Chapel locked, which was disappointing, but had a glorious picture window behind the altar out to the bush with a simple crucifix in it. Did a decade of the Rosary from the old chapel wall remnant to the house as per tradition. We're in camp clothes and hats!
Wondered along the path out on the ridge down to the Kowmung: great view down the valley to Gingra Ridge. Getting everything ready for a quick getaway in the morning. A bit shocked that tomorrow is the last full day. Planning for a long lunch on the Cox before the big lift up to Medlow Gap that afternoon.
Bit nervous about tomorrow, seems like a big day. Perry slept poorly last night, hope he does better tonight.
We planned to get an early night and a quick get away in the morning, so took the opportunity to use a bunk for the night. Very interesting reading through other walkers' impressions and it seems quite a few do the Mittagong to Katoomba walk from Hill Top (I wonder if that's to bypass the weeds?). After we add our entry (as instructed by the Kowmung House rules) we head to bed after a pretty successful, and very enjoyable day.
